Storm Doors - Good Home Accessory or Eye Sore?
Storm Doors – The Benefits of Installing One
Storm doors have come in and out of fashion over the years. While they are not as popular as they once were, they are still prevalent in our area. Do you have a storm door that you love, or do you prefer to see your front entry door? Before we discuss personal preference, let’s talk more about the function of a storm door to see if it is something that could be beneficial to your home.
A storm door is typically found on the front door of a home and is made out of one, two, or more glass panels. These doors provide an additional layer of insulation to the home by stopping air leaks that can often be found around front doors. Essentially, this traps cold or hot air between the storm door and the front door, which helps to keep the home’s inside temperature more regulated. If you live in an older home, storm doors can come in very handy to help control leaks that are often associated with older building materials.
Storm doors can also function as an additional window to your home. If you have young kids who like to play in the front yard or if you like to have a lot of natural light pouring into your home, a storm door might be a good option. These glass doors will open up what is usually blocked by a closed front door and can be quite transformative to your home. Some storm doors even have a top panel that lowers like a window, which allows fresh air in!
If you are a pet owner, opening the front door for guests or deliveries can be quite stressful. It is often a balancing act to open the door and hold back the dogs and cats that want to make their escape. A storm door would put an end to this stress for pet owners, as there would be a barrier between your front door and the outside world. Instead of opening the door to a crack and telling your guest to wait while you herd up your animals, you can open the door and then hold your furry friends back while your guest enters without the fear of your animals slipping by and running through the neighborhood.
As you can see, the creaking storm doors that we associated with our grandmother’s house from our youth are no more. Storm doors today are found in all styles to complement your home’s exterior. You can actually increase your curb appeal and your home’s value with a beautiful glass storm door accenting your front porch.
